The
first deputy head of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine,
Alexander Hug, said that military operations in the Donbass can be
stopped for one hour, but it will take much longer to complete the
conflict. He said this in an interview with Voice of America.
According
to him, after the cessation of hostilities, other components of the
conflict will be resolved, including demining the territories or
restoring the economy in the Donbas. Hug pointed out that both parties to the conflict violate the silence regime, and the steps to stop it should be “mirror”.
The
head of the Special Monitoring Mission stressed that the war in the
south-east of Ukraine will not go on forever, but will leave traces that
are difficult to hide. He cited the example of children who are now 10 years old. “They only know violence, danger, instability, deprivation. They may have lost loved ones, ”said Hug. He
noted that in five years these children will be 15 years old, and the
military conflict will leave an “indelible mark” on their lives. “We will face the problem of a whole generation,” he said.
In September, the OSCE Special Representative Martin Saidik said that the Donbass was one of the most mined areas in the world. According to him, this was due to the ongoing hostilities there. He noted that it is important to carry out humanitarian demining and develop a systematic approach to it.
According
to the UN, from April 14, 2014 to August 15, 2,737 people died in the
Donbas among the civilian population, including 144 children, injured
from 7 thousand to 9 thousand people.
