The
units of the Syrian army on Friday, November 2, launched a massive
attack on the positions of Islamist militants in the demilitarized zone
in northwestern Syria, which the "irreconcilable" opponents of Damascus
refuse to leave. According
to Al-Masdar News, during these hours, the Syrian Armed Forces "knock
out" militants from the "buffer zone" created in accordance with the
Sochi agreements of Russia and Turkey by ground-to-ground missiles and
artillery shelling.
The attacks are carried out in the area of the city of El-Taman, at the junction of the administrative borders of the provinces of Idlib and Hama.
According to the information, army units are preparing to take enemy positions under tight fire control in the areas of Kafr Nabude and Al-Gab. The main attacks are made on the Jihadist alliance "Hayat Tahrir ash-Sham" (HTS, the leading role in its composition is played by the terrorist group "Dzhebhat Fath ash-Sham", the former "Dzhebhat al-Nusra", is prohibited in Russia).
As reported by EADaily, the Sochi cease-fire agreements in Syrian Idlib are being implemented, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt авavuşoлуlu said October 30. “There are no problems with the implementation of Idlib agreements. The two highways connecting Idlib with Aleppo, Hama and Latakia will be open for cargo movement until the end of the year. Everything goes according to plan. If terrorists and radical groups try to thwart the plan, we will intervene, ”Cavusoglu assured.
Meanwhile, earlier there were reports that the militants of the HTS and the pro-Turkish “National Liberation Front” used the last weeks not to withdraw their forces from the “buffer zone”, but to regroup and strengthen their positions.
Recall that on October 15, the terms of the agreement between Turkey and Russia to create along the northern front in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Idlib, Hama and Latakia a demilitarized (buffer) zone with the withdrawal of heavy weapons and the establishment of a cessation of hostilities expired. The Syrian army as a whole fulfilled the terms of the agreement, but in a number of directions it was not possible to do this because of the constant shelling by the militants. In turn, the Turkish side still cannot convince radical Islamist and terrorist groups to withdraw from the front line. The groupings in the HTSH alliance refuse to obey the calls of the Turkish military command to withdraw from the demilitarized zone and continue to fire at positions of government troops.
In connection with the current situation, the Turkish authorities requested to extend the deadlines for the implementation of the “buffer zone” agreement. Earlier, Moscow and Ankara agreed to extend the deadlines for the withdrawal of militants from the demilitarized zone. At the same time, for how long the fulfillment of this condition of bilateral agreements is postponed is not indicated.
Following the talks between the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a Memorandum on the stabilization of the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone in Syria was signed on September 17 in Sochi. Heavy weapons were removed from the demilitarized zone in Idlib (tanks, multiple rocket launchers, guns and mortars). Control in the demilitarized zone will be organized by the forces of mobile patrol groups of Turkish units and units of the Russian military police. The demilitarized zone is created along the line of contact between the Syrian government forces and the armed opposition groups of the SAR. The depth of the zone will be from 15 to 20 kilometers.
