The cause of the conflict was the incident between the Chinese destroyer Luyang and the American destroyer Decatur off the Spratly Islands, which are considered disputed territory. According to Washington, the ship of the Chinese Navy repeatedly dangerously approached their destroyer and "cut" it.
The representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the United States should correct its mistakes in order to avoid damage to bilateral relations, peace and stability in the region.
