The
administration of US President Donald Trump is developing a new
strategy on Syria, which, inter alia, provides for the introduction of
sanctions against Russian and Iranian companies involved in the
reconstruction in Syria, CNBC News reported on Tuesday, citing sources
familiar with the strategy.
The new strategy is largely focused on ousting Iran and its friendly forces from Syria, the channel said. The strategy, according to the channel, does not imply a direct attack by the US military on Iranian forces or their allies.
On
the contrary, in order to oust Iran from Syria, the United States plans
to use political and diplomatic efforts aimed at financial pressure on
Iran, the TV channel reported.
So,
according to sources of the channel familiar with the plan, the United
States plans not to provide assistance for the restoration of those
areas of Syria, where there are Russian and Iranian troops. "The
United States may also impose sanctions on Russian and Iranian
companies working on reconstruction in Syria," reports CNBC News.
The
strategy also implies the continuation of the struggle against the
remaining centers of resistance of the IG (a terrorist organization,
banned in Russia) and the search for a political transition in Syria
after the withdrawal of the IG and Iran from there.
The
US Defense Department fears that increased attention to Iran against
the background of the presence of Iranian and American troops in Syria
may be more likely to draw the United States into the conflict, the TV
channel said.
The
source of the channel, working in the field of defense, said that,
according to the new plan, the US Department of Defense will continue to
talk about the mission in Syria as an operation against the IG. The White House and the State Department, in turn, will focus on economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran.
The
new strategy does not include a mandatory point of departure from the
power of Syrian President Bashar Assad, the channel said. At the same time, the authors of the strategy insist that the new government of Syria should not have close ties with Iran.
According
to the channel, since last year, Trump's strategy on Syria includes
four goals: smash the IS, prevent the Syrian authorities from using
chemical weapons, facilitate the political transition in Damascus, and
deter Iran.
In April, Trump announced that he wants US troops to leave Syria. However, American politicians and international allies of the United States persuaded Trump to leave troops in Syria. So,
opponents of the withdrawal of American troops declared to Trump that
their output would create a vacuum in Syria, which would be filled by
Iran and the IG, the television channel reported.
The
Trump administration believes that the sanctions that the US imposed on
Iran are already having an effect on Iran, and further economic
pressure on the country will interfere with the actions of Iranian
forces in Syria.
On
May 8, US President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the
Joint Comprehensive Action Plan on the Iranian nuclear program and the
full restoration of unilateral sanctions against Iran.
The
first block of restrictive measures against Iran, concerning the
Iranian automobile sector, as well as trade in gold and other metals,
was restored in early August.
The second block of anti-Iran sanctions should come into force before November 4. These
restrictive measures will concern the Iranian energy sector,
transactions related to hydrocarbons, and transactions related to the
central bank of Iran.
