Israeli
aircraft began striking targets on Wednesday in the Gaza Strip in
response to rocket attacks on the city of Beersheba, the army press
service said.
"At
the moment, Israeli Air Force fighters have begun strikes against
terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip," the military said in a communiqué.
Other details of the attack response is not given yet.
Earlier, air defense sirens worked in Beersheba, warning residents about rocket fire. A
little later, the military reported that they had detected two launches
from the Gaza Strip: one rocket flew to Israel, one more - towards the
sea. The
Times of Israel newspaper reports that the shell exploded in the
courtyard of a house in Beersheba, there were no wounded as a result of
the shelling, but damage was caused.
Beer-Sheva is located 40 km east of the Gaza Strip. Israel regards the shelling of this city as a serious escalation. The
last time the radicals from the Gaza Strip fired a missile at Beer
Sheva on August 9, and before that they hadn’t fired at the city for 4
years since the completion of the last military operation of the Israeli
army "Indestructible Rock" in the Palestinian enclave that lasted 50
days in July-August 2014 .
On
Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said it was
necessary to launch “very hard blows” to the Gaza Strip in order to end
the violence that had been going on since the end of March. According
to the newspaper Haaretz, the cabinet of ministers of the Jewish state
will meet on Wednesday to discuss the situation around the Gaza Strip.
