Moscow will regard any military attack on Belarus as an attack on Russia. This
was announced on Sunday by the Russian ambassador to Belarus, Mikhail
Babich, in an interview with the Belarus 1 television channel, recalling
that the countries have allied relations.
In
particular, the ambassador commented on the possibility of creating a
permanent American base in Poland, which was discussed by US President
Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda on September 18 in
Washington. “Of
course, this is an alarming factor, and they should not be neglected,”
commented Babich, who tended to militarize the region. “And
here is a very important point, I think, it is important for our
Belarusian partners and, most importantly, for all who are up to
something: an attack on Belarus will be militarily regarded as an attack
on Russia with all the ensuing consequences” - he stressed.
He
also noted that Russia and Belarus are pursuing a common military
policy on this issue, "which guarantees absolute security" of the
citizens of both countries. “And
in this situation, we are increasing our efforts in an adequately
developing environment. We have absolute mutual understanding with our
Belarusian partners: we have a regional grouping of troops and forces,
and today all the components that are necessary for both defense and retaliation ", - said the ambassador.
According
to Babich, plans to increase the US military contingent near the
borders of Russia and Belarus do not contribute to the security of
neighboring countries. “Because
certainly neither for Poland, nor for the neighboring states
<...>, where these bases are deployed, such a confrontation will
not do any good,” he concluded.
