The
EU launched a program of 1 billion euros for the development of quantum
technologies, aims to bring Europe into the world leaders in this area
in the coming years, the European Commission said on Monday.
The initiative was launched at an event in Vienna organized by the Austrian Presidency of the EU Council. “The program will finance more than 5 thousand leading European researchers of quantum technologies over the next ten years and seeks to lead Europe into the vanguard of the second quantum revolution,” the EC said.
The long-term task is the formation in Europe of the so-called quantum network, in which computers based on this technology and communication networks will be connected to each other.Initially, it is planned to finance 20 projects totaling 132 million euros under the Horizon 2020 program, and from 2021 another 130 projects are expected to be funded. The total budget can reach 1 billion euros.
“The flagship of quantum technologies will be the cornerstone of Europe’s leadership in the development of quantum technologies in the future. Quantum computers can significantly increase computing speed, and Europe needs to unite its efforts in the ongoing race for the first functional quantum computers,” said European Commissioner for digital economy and society Maria Gabriel.Earlier, Deputy Director General - Head of Information Research at the Foundation for Advanced Studies (FPI), Sergey Garbuk, said that Russian scientists had begun work on creating a quantum computer.
The Scientific and Technical Council of the FPI previously approved a project to create a quantum computer in Russia in 2018–2021. As Garbuk stated to RIA Novosti, a multi-qubit quantum computer can be created in Russia in the autumn of 2021.
