The European Union may strengthen sanctions against Russia because of the situation in the Sea of Azov

The European Parliament has prepared a draft resolution on the situation in the Sea of Azov, in which parliamentarians have included an appeal in the event of a worsening of the situation in the region to toughen sanctions against Russia.

“The EP underlines that the Kerch Bridge was built illegally, and welcomes the Council’s decision to impose restrictive measures on the six companies involved in its construction; urges the high representative for foreign policy, together with the EU member states in the Council, to make it clear that the targeted sanctions against Russia will be strengthened if the conflict in the Sea of Azov aggravates even more, ”the draft resolution reads.
Also, the document proposes to the executive authorities in the European Union to create a post of “special envoy for the Crimea and Donbass”, whose duties will cover the Sea of Azov.
In addition, the draft resolution calls on the EU Council to require Russia to stop “intensive and discriminatory inspections of courts” and expresses concern about the participation of European companies in the construction of the Crimean bridge. In this regard, parliamentarians urge the European Commission to verify the application of existing restrictive measures.
Recall that the situation in the Azov Sea aggravated at the beginning of the year, when Ukraine detained the Russian trawler “Nord”. In August, in the port of Kherson, the Ukrainian authorities detained the tanker “Mechanic Pogodin”. Russia considered Kiev’s actions "maritime terrorism."
