The US Air Force
was faced with the problem of a serious reduction in stealth fighters
after the hurricane "Michael" destroyed a lot of F-22 (F-22). And after the first accident, the Pentagon decided to suspend the participation of the F-35 (F-35) in combat operations.
F-35B fell in September. Against
the background of the investigation into the causes of the accident,
all fighters were prohibited from rising into the sky until the fuel
supply systems of each aircraft were checked for defects.
Last
week, Hurricane "Michael", which is called the most powerful in the
last 50 years, hit Florida, completely destroying the Tyndall air force
base, effectively wiping the base off the face of the Earth.
“The base is destroyed. Old houses will have to be replaced with new ones. Later facilities at the base, which survived a powerful hurricane, require major repairs, ”said Florida Senator Bill Nelson. Preliminary reports suggest that the hurricane destroyed about 17 F-22. Damaged aircraft cannot be repaired.
If this figure is confirmed, it will mean that the US Air Force lost 10% of the total number of F-22 in service. And this is a problem, because the United States relies on this particular aircraft in its dominance in the sky.
However, Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson stated that the damage was “less than we feared.” It is not yet known for sure how many airplanes were damaged by Hurricane Michael. However, military families from the Tyndall base are relocated indefinitely. The training program for pilots, which operated on the base, is suspended.
