NATO’s
Trident Juncture 2018 (Trident 2018) begins today in the Baltic Sea and
North Atlantic today, October 25, which the Alliance Secretary General
Jens Stoltenberg called Europe’s largest since the end of the Cold War.
The number of military equipment and manpower involved is indeed impressive. The
maneuvers are attended by about 50 thousand NATO troops and 10 thousand
units of military equipment, as well as 150 aircraft and 65 ships. The
NATO press center said that the Trident absorbed soldiers from all 29
NATO member countries, as well as Sweden and Finland, but the backbone
of the group is made up of US military personnel (14 thousand people)
and the Bundeswehr of Germany (10 thousand people). An impressive military contingent was put up by the host country itself - Norway.
Americans will certainly dominate the exercises. A
strike group led by the nuclear aircraft carrier Harry Truman, which
the Norwegian Prisotiv portal forsvaret.no called “the heart of Trident
Juncture”, came to the shores of Norway. The exercises are supervised by the commander of the US Navy in Europe and Africa, James Foggo, who is aboard the Truman. The admiral has already stated that "Norway is an exceptional place for this kind of exercise."
In
addition to the aircraft carrier, a ship group led by the aircraft
carrier Iwo Jima and the 24th Marine Corps Expeditionary Battalion came
to the shores of Norway from the United States.
The
“Trident” scenario is the restoration of the sovereignty of Norway, as
an ally of NATO, “after the armed aggression of the regional adversary”.
And
although NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg everywhere claims that
the “aggressor is fictional,” American publications write that the only
regional adversary in the neighborhood is Russia. The same point of view adheres to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova. According to her, "Trident" has a "clear anti-Russian orientation."
In the meantime, NATO exercises began with an emergency. In the Norwegian province of Trøndelag, a massive traffic accident occurred in which four American soldiers were injured. According
to the Norwegian Telegraph Bureau, the accident happened in a convoy of
military trucks, when one of them fell into a ditch, while the others
collided with each other.
It should be noted that accidents involving NATO militarians are no longer a rarity in Europe. For
example, in early October 2018, a NATO member from Germany was killed
in Lithuania, crashing into a tree in an armored personnel carrier.
