The
United States Air Force transferred the largest batch of ammunition to
the Ramstein airbase in Germany since the bombing of Yugoslavia. The
ammunition is designed to provide "future operations in the theater of
operations" as part of the European deterrence initiative, according to
the official website of the European Command of the US Air Force on
Friday.
"The
86th US Air Force Ammunition Squadron, stationed at the Ramstein Air
Base in Germany, received the largest batch of ammunition in recent
history. About 100 containers with various ammunition were delivered to
Ramstein in October," the US Air Force said.
According
to the chief of combat support of the 86th squadron, Captain-Sergeant
David Head, deliveries of this magnitude have not been made since the
end of the 20th century. "This
is the largest party of its kind since Operation Allied Force, which
took place in 1999," he said, referring to the 78-day campaign in
Yugoslavia.
"The
ammunition we received will be used in future operations in the theater
of operations and the expansion of the presence of the US European
Command," Head said.
The
commander of the combat support unit of the 86th squadron, master
sergeant Arthur Mirik, added that these reserves will be used to support
decisions within the framework of the European Initiative to contain
and build up the military reserves of the US Air Force in Europe.
According
to US officials, the European containment initiative should increase
the speed and readiness of the forces by deploying ammunition, fuel and
equipment in advance. This will increase the ability of the US military to "quickly respond to threats from aggressive actors."
European Containment Initiative
The
US program to strengthen the US presence in Europe to ensure security
in the region was initiated by Barack Obama in June 2014 in response to
the reunification of the Crimea with Russia and the armed conflict in
the Donbas.
Among
the main objectives of the European Initiative of deterrence are:
maintaining the permanent presence of the US Armed Forces in Central
Europe on a rotational basis, helping to ensure the security of
countries exposed to the "Russian threat", and increasing their defense
capability.
To
this end, the interaction of the armed forces of these countries with
the forces of the United States and NATO is being established, and the
effectiveness and speed of response of the armed forces of the United
States and NATO to unforeseen circumstances in Central and Eastern
Europe are improved.
Ramstein Air Base
The air base is the largest stronghold of the United States Air Force in Germany and outside the United States as a whole. Here is the headquarters of the European command of the US Air Force (United States Air Forces in Europe, USAFE). Located to the east of the city of the same name Ramstein in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
