UAE unhappy with cooperation with London in the case of a detained student

UAE's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash expressed dissatisfaction with London’s actions in the framework of cooperation in the case of the detained British student Matthew Hedges, who is suspected of spying.

“The case of Matthew Hedges has been widely discussed with colleagues from the UK over the past five months. Unusual and awkward discoveries about friends and allies,” Gargash wrote on his Twitter page.
According to British media reports this week, the 31-year-old Briton Matthew Hedges, who is a student at Durham University, was detained at the Dubai airport in May of this year while trying to return to his homeland. He came to the country to gather materials for his research on security policy in the UAE after the events of the Arab Spring.
"In the light of the reluctance of the British authorities to deal with this issue through normal channels, it will be necessary to conduct a proper legal process," the UAE’s state minister said.
The trial of Matthew Hedges began in the United States Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi. At the first hearing, he was not formally charged; the next meeting is scheduled for October 24.
